What qualifications do you need to be an eyelash technician in Australia?

Becoming a lash technician can be the start of a long, lucrative career, but how do you get started? What skills do you need, what requirements will employers want you to meet, and what legal requirements must you meet to open your own business?

While the path to becoming a lash artist differs from most others, it’s not as complex as you might expect. That isn’t to say it isn’t without challenges or hard work, but the process of getting certified can easily fit into a busy schedule. If you think you might be interested in becoming an eyelash technician, you’ll find all the steps you need below.

Eyelash Extension Training Courses

The first step to becoming a lash artist is to get educated about the job, the skills you will need, the tools you will use, and how to make it all work together. Eyelash extension training courses can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the course, and take place in person or online.

Eyelash extension courses will teach you about the different types of eyelash extensions and how to apply them, different eye types and shapes, and health and safety precautions. Lashia Eyelash Design hosts small classes for enhanced personalization and mentoring to ensure every student learns the material to the fullest extent.

First-time students are often surprised about the level of precision and detail involved in becoming a lash artist. While professionals make it look easy, it requires a slow, steady hand and a great deal of patience to master. However, you can learn these skills with practice and dedication.

When you pass your eyelash training, you will receive your eyelash extension certification and be ready to work. You aren’t required to get a university degree.

Work in A Salon

With your certification, you may feel the urge to jump in with your own business right away. While it’s possible to find success this way, you may be missing out on valuable experience working in an established salon as a lash artist. Putting your lash extension training to use for an employer is a chance for you to build networks within the industry, create relationships with clients, and show off your abilities without considerable financial investment in your own building or advertising. If you decide to open your own salon, the connections you make during this time can give you a huge head start in terms of reliable clientele and the practical business smarts of client service skills, scheduling, and vendor relations.

You should know that, in either scenario, working as a lash artist and technician usually isn’t necessarily a normal 9-5 job. Most technicians work by appointment only and make their own hours. This may differ if you work in an established salon, as some salons garner business largely (or at least partly) from walk-ins, and need a lash artist on hand in case of an impromptu appointment.

Open Your Own Business

Once you decide to become your own boss and open your salon (if you choose to do so), it’s a pretty straightforward process.

First, you need to apply for an Australian Business Number or ABN. You can do this at any time, even if you don’t intend to open your business right away. You will need an ABN to operate legally in Australia. Thankfully, the application process is pretty simple.

Second, you need to settle on a location for your business. Some lash artists open separate salons while others operate out of a space in their home. One option isn’t better than the other so long as the location you choose can fit your necessary equipment, has modern safety equipment like smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, makes customers feel comfortable and welcome, and meets all government criteria for operating a business (zoning, permits, etc).

Third, you need to make your presence known. This is where working for someone else comes in handy. With established business connections and clientele, you’ll have the benefit of word of mouth on top of whatever advertising you do.

But being a professional lash technician doesn’t end there, however.

Continual Education is the Road to Success

Even though you’re already certified, your education as a lash artist never stops (just as fashion and beauty never stop evolving). Continual education through master courses and expert techniques classes keep you up to date on best practices, new tools, give you a chance to connect with other stylists, and keep you in touch with your mentors. Having a friendly environment to learn and expand your skills safely allows you to stay on top of your game and one-step ahead of the industry’s changes. Perhaps most importantly, taking advanced eyelash extension training courses means you never stop honing your craft and becoming the mentor-level artist you can be.
